Rob Weir wrote:It is probably worth reflecting why the Sun Plugin was necessary in the first place. If Microsoft Office supported ODF fully, in a well-integrated and interperable fashion, then surely no ODF Plugin would be necessary. You would gain your ODF support simply by purchasing your MS Office license. In effect, you are already paying for ODF support (along with all other Office features) when you purchase MS Office. If you are buying Oracle’s $90 Plugin, remember that you are essentially paying for ODF support twice: once to Microsoft and once to Oracle. Well, Weir's analysis is very interesting. But it supposes that customers are aware of what is at stake here and that they are willing to pay for a good ODF support. And I'm not sure that the ODF is popular/known enough yet. As MS Office and OOo don't have exactly the same features, why pay for a plugin that may not allow the full use of MS Office when you can install OOo for free (with its native ODF support)? The risk is to discourage people and that they keep working in that old known.doc format! Interesting also! But there is a fact that is not well taken into account IMHO: the overwhelming presence of the.doc format! It's so commonly used by everyone (now you understand why MS has never really fought the pirated copies of MS Office) that the biggest problem for ODF is to get the focus and to make clear why users should use it. As long as the users are not convinced, why bother with a new file format? Very often, the desktop in companies includes MS Office and saving in.doc,.xls. Is so 'natural' then. Same for sending files to other companies too. Even if MS Office 2007 needs some training, I've not seen a single user in the company I work for being trained for the new interface! The rationale is: well, that's MS Office, just put up with the new interface, once you are accustomed to the features location, no change at all (we are in a mixed environment, most of users are still running W2k). Moreover there is the MS brand that can't be ignored. Just because it's MS, then it has some reliability feeling for most people because, well, that's what everyone uses! And many open source applications are still seen as amateur with bugs because there is no [known] big pool of developers behind. That's behind the file format issue but the application and its file format are tightly linked together.
